This is the last of the 3 part series of shows that talk about what happened while this show was off the air. Most importantly, I have some things to address to specific people and I'm glad I was able to get the chance to do just that. On a rare occasion, some of the shows have been entirely about our life. This is one of those shows. On this episode I talk about the day that changed our lives forever and how that day created a chain of events that caused me to spiral out of control. In light of the recent story of a 19 year old who committed suicide on the internet while people cheered him on, I dedicate this show to that young man's memory. His name was Abraham Bigg. He didn't deserve that, and perhaps hearing my story, you may in a way understand what his last thoughts were like. Thank you for listening.

I've received lots of emails and voicemails recently asking why a new show hasn't come out. I've had a hard time trying to come to grips with everything but I think it's time to level with you. Jenny and I are getting a divorce. It's been a very difficult time for me and I appreciate all the concerned emails I've received. As far as the show goes, I still plan to continue doing it but it may be a while before I do another one and I will have guest hosts going forward. I wish Jenny the best in whatever her future endeavors bring her. Things sometimes don't work out quite like we planned and that's certainly the case here. I love each and every one of you and I appreciate you sticking with the show.

Oops I did it again...

Well Mrs. Valenzuela didn't resign so I felt the point needed to be expressed again. So here is what I said at the council meeting tonight:

3 weeks ago I stood in this same spot and came seconds short of finishing my statement. Tonight, I'll get right to the point tonight. Councilwoman Valenzuela, the allegations against you are extremely serious yet your recent comments in the paper don't seem to address the seriousness of the charges. I suggest that you resign from your council seat immediately so we can move to have leadership that we can trust and remembers who they work for. But more importantly, resign so this community can move forward and tackle the important issues we face.

In addition to your apparent lack of concern, Councilwoman Hildebrandt appears to share your flippant attitude. Her comments regarding this matter in the East Valley Tribune speak volumes. She stated she voted no on recommending an investigation because she believes Mrs. Valenzuela was joking. I have to ask, when was she joking? Was she joking when she called a businessman and threatened a no vote if someone wouldn't buy her business? Or was the joke when she approached a fellow council member and said your ass is mine? The people of this community deserve councilmembers who take their position seriously and make a commitment to the oaths they take. I shouldn't have to remind either of you that you represent all of us and not just here in these chambers.

A note to Toni Valenzuela

Well the weekend has come and gone. As you may have read on this blog, I spoke out at the last town council meeting on January 16th in favor of councilwoman Toni Valenzuela resigning in response to the charges she currently faces. All 3 local newspapers have covered this story in some way. By far, the best coverage was courtesy of the East Valley Tribune. They get what's going on here in Queen Creek, they understand the charges of corruption are serious and needed to be treated as such. They did their homework and made sure they interviewed all sides of this situation.

When I read the story, I found the most amazing quotes came from the very people I accused of abusing the public trust: Toni Valenuzela and Joyce Hildebrandt. As I expected, Toni had no comment on my suggestion that she resign. Joyce on the other hand brought herself into a giant spotlight with her comments. She said, "She always just jokes,” and “She never thinks about what she said because she’s teasing. That’s just her, that’s the way she is. It doesn’t mean anything.”

Joyce, do you realize what she's charged with? Do you realize how serious these allegations are? The charges include open meeting violations, using her political office to attempt to gain favor over someone for her benefit and intimidation of another council member. I've seen people walked out of my workplace for far less, but to you, this is just jokes. Toni is the town comedian and you are right there in the front row to laugh. Well if you're right, Toni is playing a big joke on all of us by trying to win her seat back. I want you both to understand that I have no intention of backing down and I'm asking others to join me to again call for her resignation. And this time Joyce, I think your lack of judgment is now calling into question your ability to effectively do your job. If you can't see how serious this is that your friend called someone and threatened to use their vote to benefit their business, then you obviously aren't fit to sit in the chair you lay claim to twice a month. I don't think this is funny. I love comedy, but this Joyce and Toni, isn't funny. I'll see you on the 30th and I won't be telling any jokes.

The statement I didn't get to finish

I went in front of our local town council tonight and tried to read all of the following. Unfortunately, I got to the "fool me once" part before I was cut off due to a 3 minute time limit. Here is the entire statement:

Good evening Mayor and council members,

I am here before you tonight to address some concerns I have read over recent allegations regarding Mrs. Toni Valenzuela. Last month, some troubling stories emerged in the East Valley Tribune and Arizona Republic regarding the conduct of Councilwoman Valenzuela. As all of you know, the stories alleged that Councilwoman Valenzuela used her position of power to coerce and intimidate the parties behind the Vanderbuilt Farms project. Those parties allege that Mrs. Valenzuela contacted them to advise them that unless they arranged for her restaurant to be purchased, she would vote no on their project. This is a very serious allegation and with the exception of one of you, you all have taken this matter very seriously by voting in favor of hiring an investigator and recommending further investigation by the State Attorney Generals office into possible open meeting violations and conflict of interest charges. I am left to wonder why one of you decided that this matter wasn't serious enough to turn it over to officials to investigate but that is for you to answer.

Her response to these charges is that is a simple misunderstanding and she points to the vote she made that night in favor of the proposal as her proof that there were no illegal actions taken. The allegations from the parties involved with Vanderbuilt Farms came days after the vote in the form of a letter to the town attorney. They insist they did not arrange to buy the councilwoman's business but felt it was important for town officials to know that these events occurred. This led to a he said, she said situation and at the time I was willing to give Mrs. Valenzuela the benefit of the doubt.

Then came the evening of the vote to decide whether to hire an investigator and turn this matter over to state officials. I honestly never expected to read the next set of allegations that stemmed from that night's meeting. As you all have probably read, there were allegations that Councilwoman Valenzuela approached fellow Councilwoman Colletto Cohen and threatened her with the statement "Your ass is mine". Mrs. Colletto Cohen felt this issue was serious enough to press charges and bring this issue to the attention of the town's attorney. Mrs. Valenzuela promptly left the town council chambers and later stated she had an emergency to tend to. When questioned about this incident, she again stated that there was a misunderstanding. She states, what she meant to say is she "wishes she had her butt", which changes things from a threat to possible sexual harassment. I again was willing to give things the benefit of the doubt until I read there was a witness who saw the entire exchange and verified Councilwoman Colleto Cohen's side of the story.

To this latest explanation I have to say "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". I can no longer believe that every contact Mrs. Valenzuela has ends in a complete misunderstanding of what was said.

Mrs. Valenzuela, as you are not only a mother, a wife and a grandmother, but also an elected official, it's up to you to lead by example and let the truth be known. You can choose to deny all the allegations and let the town pay for the cost to investigate the charges or you can do the honorable move by stepping down from your position as councilwoman and fully cooperating with any investigation. Respect the people of this community, do the right thing and resign as soon as possible.

Hail hail Obama

So the Iowa caucuses have come and gone. Unless you were under a rock or purposely avoiding all political coverage (which probably means you hate my political talks on the show), you noticed that Obama and Mike Huckabee (new name for him on the next show, tune in for details) won in Iowa. I'm not entirely surprised that Huckabeee won. Even though the guy spent far less than Romeny did, he didn't flip flop quite like Romney managed to do time after time. Iowa people are farmers and they know how to smell bullshit. They knew Romney was a big phony as I've told you all along on the show, but now they got a chance to say enough to the phony. Iowans are also a religious bunch and early entry polls shows that over 60 people of Republican voters who showed up at the caucus tonight identified themselves as evangelical. Let's guess who the evangelicals were going to vote for...A guy who had an affair and broke up with his wife on tv....Nope. How about a guy who never met a hammock he didn't like....nope. How about a guy who flops around like a fish in a boat....Nope. So I guess the only choice they had was the former Baptist minister. So as I mentioned, no big surprise.

Now comes the stunner. A black man won in Iowa! I'll say it again, a black man won in Iowa! I couldn't be more proud of what Obama managed to accomplish in Iowa. The guy is extremely talented at giving a stump speech but let's be honest here, Iowa is 95 percent white. They aren't racist but people tend to vote for people who are most like them and identify with their values. Obama spoke truthfully to them, gave some moments of laughter and was simply the best candidate in Iowa. I have to admit, I was choked up watching him give his acceptance speech and I'm a guy who's pulling for Edwards. Obama looked like a strong President tonight. He looked nothing like the current doofus running our country into the ground. I told Jenny that I would love to see a day when a black man could be President of the United States. I said that 2 weeks ago. Tonight, that dream looks like it could be a reality if the chips fall right. Obama, I'm proud of you and I know if you become our 44th President, America would be proud to have you as our leader. Again, this is from a guy who's pulling for Edwards. Congratulations and good luck in New Hampshire. Oh and Hillary, you might want to follow Biden's lead....

Taking a stand

Recently, the town council of Queen Creek voted and approved the process of having an invocation before each town council meeting going forward. In plain English, this means that the town of Queen Creek will be reading a prayer before each meeting. They will be offering an open invitation to members of all faiths to read a prayer. Councilwoman Lisa Colletto Cohen had suggested an alternative idea of allowing a moment of silence so people could pray, reflect or do what they wish during that time. That suggestion was pushed aside and by a 6 to 1 vote, the town of Queen Creek opened pandora's gigantic legal box.

I'll be upfront and say that I'm an agnostic. But far more important to me than what faith I worship or not, is the basis of our country, The Constitution. Our forefathers had the foresight and understanding of current events of their time to make the very first thing they granted all of us is the right to freedom of religion. But it also guarantees the separation between church and state. This is where I have a major problem with what the council did.

Instead of allowing each of us an opportunity to privately pray to our God, Allah, Flying Spaghetti Monster or whatever we wish, they decided it was far more important to appease the religious desires of some to make faith a part of the public square. This decision of course was met with applause by those who fought to ensure a new division in the town. I'm sure this decision stemmed from another recent debate on calling the tree we have in front of the town hall a "Holiday Tree" instead of a "Christmas Tree".

While I celebrate everyone's right to pray, attend church, not attend church or practice their faith in their own way, I do take serious offense to this new concept that America is a Christian nation. I took it upon myself to investigate this further to see if we truly were founded on Christian principles and as I expected, nothing was further from the truth. Even in 1960, President John F. Kennedy gave a famous speech where he proclaimed an understanding that the US was not founded on one religion and religious beliefs don't belong in the public square. I could only wish we would return to those days where no religion was treated as a national religion and all faiths were equally respected. But more importantly, I hope the people who are seated on the town council would realize that religion has no business in politics.

As we have passed the time that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, I would like to wish you all a happy holiday season and ask that you consider the words of JFK:

"I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute--where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishoners for whom to vote--where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference--and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.

I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish--where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source--where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials--and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all."

Ok, I can't contain myself

I'm finding it harder and harder to wait to do a show because so much happens between the shows, especially if we go on an extended break like we're doing right now. As many of you know, I'm a big time political junkie. I live, breathe, eat, shower...etc politics. So I've decided that unless something really funny in politics happens (hey it could happen), I'm going to keep my ranting of my political thoughts to the blog. So if you want to my political rants, here's the place to come to.

So...let's talk about the big news today. No, I don't care about Jamie Lynn Spears. Congrats, move onward girl. But the other big news was the bill that was signed into law that gives Bush the chance to act like Al Gore. You know...the bill that raises the CAFE standards for cars so we actually get up the same environmental standards as China in about 13 years.

Now I don't want to bash Bush too hard because he did sign the bill so that's a good thing but what I think the media failed to report was the backroom nonsense that went on with this bill and they really blew it on an outright lie that Bush told on why he considered vetoing the original bill. When the bill was first introduced, it removed the tax subsidies that the Republicans gave to the oil companies and offered tax subsidies for companies and customers or renewable energy. Sounds like a fair trade right? Oil companies only get to make 3 billion a quarter and renewable energy like solar and wind get a chance to take off.

But Bush of course immediately stated he'd veto that version because it would "tax Americans". That's Bushspeak for "it would cause my friends who have large stock portfolios in oil companies to feel a small prick in their inner dark souls". So you know there would be a huge fight. And oh was there....When the bill was introduced, the Republicans immediately filibustered it. Now for those of you who aren't hip to your politics, to filibuster a bill means you will not allow the bill to be heard on the floor of your respected chamber. To break that filibuster, you need 60 members of the Senate to vote for cloture which forces a debate on the bill. Well the Dems don't have 60 friends, even amoungst themselves so they were forced to ensure the oil companies went on to bankroll their new Christmas gifts for their kids. Thank God!

So now the bill that went through the house and senate offer some positives. For example, lightbulbs as you know them will be replaced by energy efficient bulbs. Appliances in the near future will be required to use less energy and you'll start seeing cars that offer better gas mileage starting in 2011. But there's something to consider with the better mileage discussion. That 35 mpg requirement is an average. So if you were thinking Hummers were going away, think again. GM simply needs to build a vehicle to average out the wastefulness of the Hummer and life goes on for GM.

So I think there's some things to smile about with this bill but there's a lot that will need to wait till someone with real environmental leadership principles is in the EPA and the White House.
